Frequently Asked Questions
Why ring Nightline?
There are lots of reasons you might want to call. We've got information
on just about everything you need to know as a student in Leeds...and
if we don't have the information to hand, we'll try to find it for you.
You can also ring if something is on your mind, whether big or small.
We'll just listen calmly and support you in discussing your feelings,
situation and/or possible solutions. What sort of person rings Nightline?
There
is no "average" caller. From requests for late night bars, to someone
who is lonely and wants to hear a friendly voice. No reason for calling
Nightline is too big or too small.
How many calls do you get?
The service is well used at all times of the year, both for listening and information.
However, there are certain times of the year when call numbers are
particularly high, such as exam periods, when we are inundated with
hundreds of calls requesting exam info, and also those suffering from
exam stress.
What's being a volunteer all about?
All
volunteers, once they've completed their training, do at least three
full night shifts per term. This involves being in the office from 8pm
till 8am, taking phone calls and supporting the other volunteers on
duty, on a night chosen by you. The long shift is not as bad as it
sounds, as the office is really nice and you get a plentiful supply of
tea and biscuits! For more info see Getting Involved. Who are Nightliners?
Nightline is staffed entirely by student volunteers, and co-ordinated
by a Sabbatical officer- an ex-volunteer who works full-time from the Nightline Daytime Office.
There is no typical Nightliner- they are all students at Leeds Uni of
Leeds Met, but they come from a wide range of backgrounds.
